Notes on La Boheme
Editorial Design
Notes on ‘La Boheme’ is an adaptation and reinterpretation of Giacomo Puccini’s opera of the same name. Divided into four chapters, each inspired by one of the main characters in the original ‘La Boheme’, the book offers essays on different artistic practices as positioned in the context of 1830s Paris in which the story takes place. They are followed by an english version of the original libretto, as well as images of the opera as performed in the Sydney Opera House.
The different elements of the book design are representative of the most iconic aspects of the opera. The sense of deterioration, escapism and search for warmth, which are all crucial to the narrative, are included in the design through the book’s grid, use of colour and word spacing.
