Ai, who am I?

2025 / Critical Design

In the field of design, the notion of “human-centred” practice takes on new meanings as human identity becomes increasingly intertwined with technological development. Misinterpretations of users pose a significant risk for designers, particularly as artificial intelligence becomes further embedded within design processes.

This project interrogates the algorithmic portrayal of individuality, opening a critical conversation that problematises the role and agency of AI in design in relation to its capacity to grasp human complexity. A series of publicly available large language models is employed to construct representations of my own identity according to contrasting standards that AI applies to human identity, with a particular focus on physical traits. The project unfolds through sustained interaction with artificial intelligence via conversational and image-generation processes, offering a critical reflection on the resulting representations and their implications.
