En cuquitos
2023 / Creative + Art Direction
In conversation and confrontation with her coming of age years, María opens up debates about the juxtaposition that lies in between childhood and adolescence. ‘En Cuquitos’ allows for a space of personal reflection in response to self perception, and in contrast with lenses of societal norms.
The creative process stemmed from an in-depth, personal ethnography of contemporary artist and project director, María Escobar. By conducting several interviews and shadowing her artistic undertaking, I engaged with an art-based research which was translated into a cohesive visual and narrative experience. I constructed this language through the whole art direction and styling of a photographic session. Following cinematic storytelling techniques inspired by film theory, I also collaborated with María in the direction of the photoshoot, ensuring that her vision came to life while also constantly feeding the creative aspects of it.
Through analog and digital photography, the viewer is immersed into a fabricated fantasy of María’s own experiences. The subject exists in the midst of longing for a sense of innocence, while coming by an awareness of the realities attached to growing up.
