Cartografía de Materias

Critical Design

In ‘Signos Cardinales’ (2008), Colombian artist Libia Posada, questions the established elements of the human experience in regards to social contexts and conduct. By inscribing the journey of female refugees into their legs, she acknowledges the issue of forced displacement through personal testimonies.

Cartografía de materias takes inspiration from her work to approach similar topics through new lenses. This interpretation displays the route followed by Ali, a Venezuelan refugee fleeing his country, as well as the few objects he took with him in order to survive. It exhibits an insight into the relationship between the material world and the refugee experience, while highlighting the harsh reality of having to detach oneself from personal belongings.
